World Book Week at Monksmoor Park
|
|
This year World Book Day was on Thursday 7th March, it is a worldwide celebration of reading, authors and illustrators. Research shows that reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success, and something at Monksmoor we are very passionate about. Therefore we celebrated reading through a whole week of events!

On Monday we really enjoyed a book swap. We each brought a book into school and browsed the other books. It was fun looking for a new story with our friends and getting to take something new home! Book swap photos

On Wednesday of our World Book Week, the children were invited to recreate a story inside a jar, using craft materials and some imagination! The children's wonderful competition entries are currently on display in our school library for all the children to appreciate at their library session. Entries will be sent home before the end of term.
A winning entry from EYFS, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 were selected and awarded a certificate and £5 book voucher. Well done to everyone who took part, and thank you for sharing some of your favourite stories through your jar art! Story Inside a Jar Competition

Last week Nursery enjoyed taking part in the school's World Book Day events and we welcomed some Year 4 children to read our favourite stories with us. This week we have been learning about how things grow and have planted some cress as part of our healthy foods topic. We have retold the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. Nursery photos

Reception visited Abington Park Museum this week and we had a wonderful time! All the children took part in a workshop about toys with a museum teacher and toured the museum engaging in lots of interactive activity. We are so proud of how enthusiastic and engaged the children were throughout. We have continued to learn about the Easter story and are in the middle of our Little Red tale. Reception photos

Year 1 have been enjoying some Easter themed Forest School sessions to fit in with their RE learning on Salvation. The children have listened to the Easter story, had an Easter Egg hunt and made Easter crosses by finding and joining sticks and wrapping them with wool. They have enjoyed finding minibeasts and spotting birds and testing their balancing skills over the muddy water! Easter Outdoors photo gallery

As part of our celebrations for World Book Day, Year 1 participated in some activities linked to our current English book, The Queen's Hat. Miss Colton came in dressed in her Air Cadet uniform and lead the children in a marching experience which they thoroughly enjoyed. They also loved making their own royal crowns.

Our current Science learning unit is all about animals, including food chains and life cycles. We created our own versions of the butterfly life cycle using pasta shapes. To reinforce our learning about butterfly life cycles, we have some very hairy new classroom visitors in the form of 5 caterpillars! We have been excitedly watching them grow bigger and we are looking forward to watching them transform into butterflies over the coming weeks! Year 2 photos

Badgers Class has had a busy few weeks, firstly with our school trip to Daventry Museum to learn about the Romans. We were lucky to see real Roman coins, which we could study through a magnifying glass. We also dug for treasure and designed our own coins. When we returned to school we continued our learning designing shields, researching what Roman inventions we still use and looking at their expansion across Europe. It was a day filled with Roman learning. Find out more

In DT, Year 4 have been learning about simple machines including levers, inclined planes, pulleys, wedges, wheel and axles and screws. We learned that they make a load easier to move and that they can be combined to make compound machines. We looked at various photographs of machines to see if we could identify which simple machines were being used. Year 4 photos

In computing we have built flat-file databases and been introduced to the different terms used when talking about the storage and retrieval of datasets. Our artwork has also made use of digital technology where we used SketchUp, a 3D modelling tool, to build structures and think about how we could use these to build our very own ancient Greek pillars and buildings. Book week has been celebrated by Reception in Forest School. We shared the story of 'Superworm' by Julia Donaldson and thought about all the ways in which we too are 'super'. We then set off to hunt for woolly worms and discussed how it was much easier for us to find the brightly coloured ones rather than the worms which were more camouflaged to their surroundings. Attendance - Is my child too ill for school?
For most pupils, the best place to be during term-time in is school, surrounded by the support of their friends and teachers.
This is important not just for your child’s learning, but also for their overall wellbeing, wider development and their mental health.
As a parent, it can be difficult to know when to send your child into school if they are feeling unwell or mildly anxious, but finding solutions is a team effort between schools, parents and children, and there is support and information available to help you make the best decision for your child.
It’s usually safe for parents and carers to send their children to school with mild illnesses, like a minor cough, runny nose or sore throat.
However, children should stay at home if they have a high temperature of 38C or above.
The NHS has published guidance to help parents and carers decide whether their child is well enough to attend school, including information on a range of common childhood illnesses and conditions, such as coughs, colds, chickenpox and headlice.

Lost Property
There is an increasing amount of unnamed lost property, if your child has lost something please have a look in the baskets at the front of the school. When reunited, please label with your child's name so if they lose the item again it can be returned.
