Week ending 3rd March 2023

World Book Day

World Book Day was on Thursday 2nd March this year, it is a worldwide event to celebrate reading, authors and illustrators.  Research shows that reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success, and therefore we chose to celebrate reading through a whole week of events!

On Monday children across Nursery to Year 4 paired up with children in another year group to enjoy a story of their choice.  Have a look at our photos.

On Tuesday, children and parents were invited to take part in a book swap, bringing in one book from home to swap for another.

It was time to get creative on Wednesday, as the children were invited to take part in a competition to design an alternative book cover for their favourite story.  Here is our winner from Nursery, well done Olivia!

Thursday was the big day itself, World Book Day!  We invited everyone to wear pyjamas to school for the day in order to celebrate the importance of bedtime stories.  We were delighted to be able to have parents and carers into school to join their child/children to share a story.
Your child should have brought home a World Book Day voucher too, for more information on how to spend this see the poster below.
On Thursday some children from Years 1-4 also enjoyed a story time themed local trip.  Read the 'Always Ready Club!' news below to find out more.

During the day on Friday the children had an opportunity to watch a retelling of a story online from the National Theatre Collection for Primary schools. The performances are designed to bring stories off the page and excite the children about popular tales.

We hope you and your child enjoyed the week and perhaps got to enjoy a new story or a favourite story in a new way!

Always Ready Club!

This week's 'Always Ready Club' had an extra special treat!  Children from years 1-4 were invited along to one of the Crest Nicholson show homes nearby for a special story time with some local authors.  We enjoyed listening to the story and asking questions afterwards.  Our children were excellent representatives of the school.  Photo gallery

Our activities throughout this week in Nursery have supported World Book Day and some of the favourite stories we have enjoyed have included The Very Hungry Caterpillar, We're Going On A Bear Hunt, The Enormous Turnip, Goldilocks and Owl Babies. Photo gallery

We had parents join us on the morning of World Book Day and we all had a fantastic time singing songs together and retelling the 'The Enormous Turnip' - thank you to all those hero parents who 'volunteered' to be characters from the story. And well done on joining in with all the actions.

Year 2 News

Year 2 have been working hard to finish their "Flower Head" project this week inspired by the work of Yayoi Kasuma.  They worked carefully to paint their flower sculptures in layers to give each layer time to dry.  They are now proudly displayed in our classroom!

For World Book Day, Year 2 were inspired by the book "Love is..." by Lily Murray and created their own pages for a class book titled "Reading is...".  We wrote our lines carefully and then used watercolour paints to add some colour.

This week in Year 3, the children have been busy making and grouting mosaics.  The children have been multiplying 2 digit numbers by a single digit and have also been dividing a 2 digit number by a single digit.  In RE we have been learning about Palm Sunday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday and linking these bible stories to the idea of salvation.

We reached another Monksmoor Park milestone today as for the first time ever we waved children off on a residential trip.  Some very excited Year 4 children and excited staff went on a residential trip to Everdon Outdoor Learning Centre.

The Year 4 children loved their first activity today.  Suited and booted they took a short walk to a lovely meadow to put their orienteering skills to the test.  Photo gallery
