A busy week in Nursery has seen us welcome a baby into visit us as we learned all about how to care for people in our families. We have also listened to the story Monkey Puzzle and learned about how not all baby animals look like their parents. As part of our well-being work, we were introduced to the story of Boris the Robot and began work on creating our own handmade Boris, using things we found in the junk modelling boxes. Photo gallery

We have continued to explore autumn and have begun to learn to story-tell 'The Little Red Hen'. We have practised our painting and added detail with fine brushes, creating wonderful chickens. We have also looked at changing materials, creating snowballs with water and newspaper which was really messy!

In Year 1 we have been learning about Neil Armstrong being the first man on the moon. We used role-play to help us remember some of the key facts. First we went to astronaut school to learn some skills we might need for a visit to the moon. We then boarded Apollo 11 and set off for our mission. We enjoyed wearing our astronaut helmets and exploring the moon.

This week in History Year 2 have been learning about chronology and timelines. We learned lots of new vocabulary such as “decade” “century” and “chronological”. We saw how a timeline can be split in to BC and AD and how to order the years chronologically. We then placed the significant people we have been learning about on a timeline based on their year of birth. Well done Year 2! More photos

In Geography we were introduced to four stages of the Water Cycle in preparation for our LIVE lesson with Anglian Water on Friday and in PSHE we continued to think about what makes us happy and made a start on Mrs Tower’s Class Challenge – to create the word FRIENDSHIP with our bodies – we thought we would start with play-dough first! This week Year 5 have been finishing their Highwayman poetry in preparation to start planning their independent write. In maths we have applied formal written methods of addition and subtraction to solve calculations involving numbers with 5-digits. Our PE sessions have seen us working in small groups to use teamwork to solve challenges and in topic we have used 6-figure grid references to identify locations on OS maps within 100 m2. Some of the children in Reception enjoyed their first visit to our Forest School this week. We had so much fun playing in the muddy puddle, hunting for minibeasts and helping Mr Owl find his woodland friends who had hidden themselves around Forest School. Mrs Copland showed us her funny duck whistle and we learnt that we have to 'freeze' when we hear it. She was very impressed with how well we could put our suits and boots on ourselves. More photos

Our newly appointed Junior Ethos Team had their first meeting this week. They attended an online meeting about pupil led worship in schools. The team were one of over 800 schools on that very first session of it's kind for Picture News. The children learned about Collective Worship and planning sessions and saw some examples of other schools. The children thoughtfully contributed to the session and even had one of their comments read out. The Junior Ethos Team are currently pondering the abbreviation of JETS for their team name.

Coats 4 Kids
Last autumn, a member of our congregation, Mr. John Robinson organised a collection at the church and via social media, to raise money to buy coats and jackets, for children in Daventry. This year the PCC have decided to support John in this venture, and to make ‘Coats 4 Kids’ a church venture.
The initiative’s aim is to provide new coats and jackets to children at our town schools who would otherwise not have the necessary clothing to keep them warm and dry this coming winter. We are currently running a campaign to collect donations from members of our church community towards the supply coats and jackets for this autumn. However, we would like you to invite your staff and parents, and organisations you are connected with, to raise money for this worthy cause as well.
Please encourage people to visit our website at www.holycrosschurchdaventry.org.uk to make a donation via the QR code on our dedicated fundraising page for Coats 4 Kids.
Revd. Dawn Stokes
Holy Cross Church, Daventry
If you feel that this is something that could help support your family's needs this year, please contact the school office in confidence.

Blue Peter Book Badge
|
|
Blue Peter has unveiled a new Book badge, designed by one of the UK's best-known illustrators, Sir Quentin Blake. The Blue Peter Book badge will be awarded to children aged 5-15 (what a shame us grown ups can’t earn one too!) who send in their thoughts on a book, draw a character or scene and share which other books and writers they love.
Find out more here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/findoutmore/blue-peter-apply-for-a-book-badge?collection=blue-peter-badges
It would be great to see as many of these as possible popping up at Monksmoor Park!

Whole School Art Project
We are once again completing a whole school Christmas art project involving all classes Nursery through to Year 5, for display at the Holy Cross Church in Daventry.
Mrs Davis led us in creating our Monksmoor Angel Joy last year for the Holy Cross Christmas tree festival and we won first prize. This year there is no festival but we are honoured to have been asked to produce a piece of art for the Church to display throughout December.
Mrs Davis is leading our project and she and our classes would like you and your children to help in a variety of ways please:
- Can you collect pine cones and acorns on your autumnal walks?
- Can you supply us with any white decorations, wool and ribbons?
- We also need white stuffing to make a snowman's body. We need old (but clean) cushion or pillow insides/filling.
If you can help with any of the above please send it to your child's classroom in a bag labelled for Mrs Davis. Thank you in advance for your support!
