Nursery News

Following on from last week, colour has been the focus of our learning in Nursery this week, as we have enjoyed the story 'Elmer the Elephant.' The children have created their own patchwork Elmers and have played circle games to learn that sharing smiles, waves and hellos with our friends really does make them happy. We were also visited by a kitten as we continued to learn about how to look after animals. See our Elmer and kitten photos

Reception News

We have been making the most of the change in the weather and observing change in our plants and vegetables, they've grown so much! We are now focussing on building our independence and sharing our skills, we are amazing model makers! We have really enjoyed extending our learning about weather through exploring wind this week and are beginning to build our very own weather station! Photo gallery

Please can we ask children have sun hats in school as we are making the most of the weather to learn about growing our gardens and plants. More photos

Year 1 News

In Year 1 we have started our food technology topic 'Chop, Slice and Mash'. This week we have been exploring using different tools to prepare food including cutting and mashing banana and grating cheese and carrots. We also enjoyed eating the food we had prepared!

In art this week we have been looking at the patterns on a tortoise shell. We used sketching pencils to create the patterns and also used collage to make patterned shells. Photo gallery

Year 2 News

In science we have been learning about hygiene and thinking about how germs spread and how we need to wash our hands to prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses. We created a model of this by covering our hands in oil and glitter and then shaking hands of another to see how the "glitter germs" might be passed from one person to another.

In our beach hut unit we are learning about structures. We have finished creating beach huts out of cardboard and we have moved on to learning how to use a junior hacksaw safely to cut wood to create a wooden box frame for our next beach hut model. We have also been exploring why triangles are more stable shapes than squares using cocktail sticks and gummy sweets as connectors to investigate independently.  Year 2 photo gallery

Year 3 News

We have also started our unit 'Contrast and Complement' in art. This project teaches children about colour theory by studying the colour wheel and colour mixing. It includes an exploration of tertiary colours, warm and cool colours, complementary colours and analogous colours, and how artists use colour in their artwork. During our first lesson we enjoyed working with the paint, achieving a balance between water and paint! Year 5 News

Dragonflies have been working on their formal letter writing this week to complete their unit linked the fantastic picture book “FArTHER”. We have really tried to capture the writer’s voice in our work so that their character comes across in their correspondence to a family member. In maths we have completed our work on decimals, where we saw how to add and subtract them and also how to multiply them by 10, 100 and 1000. We now turn our attention to negative numbers and converting units of measurement.

Our science work has seen us examining the life cycles of humans and analysing gestation length data for different mammal to make scientific comparisons and draw conclusion and have seen how the growth of a baby is tracked through estimations so that medical help can be provided if a baby is under or over weight in their early stages of life.

In topic we continue to examine the historical importance of the Shang Dynasty, and have learnt and the powerful figure of Lady Fu Hao through the archaeological finds from her tomb and scriptures written on Oracle bones.

With the sun finally making an appearance we have been enjoying our PE lessons outside that have seen us honing our tennis skill (just in time for Wimbledon!).

Our Weekly SHINE Awards

Well done to all our award winners for being a shining example.

This is the 11th year of this fabulous Ballroom and Latin dance event designed to encourage school children from across the region to have a try at dancing and nurture team work. From its early days as Strictly Junior, the show has now evolved to Dancing Schools UK and seen over 3000 children having braved the stage, stepped out into the spotlight and done something they never thought they would do – dance in front of hundreds of people.

This Sunday our Year 1 and Year 2 team will be taking part in a dancing competition at the Derngate Theatre where they will perform the Polka and a Waltz to a large audience. We wish them all the best of luck!

The team have already had a taste of dancing on stage in front of an audience when they travelled to Rutland to perform in a dance show with schools from the Rutland Learning Trust. The children performed a Polka on the stage in front of a small audience. They were some of the youngest performers and they all did an amazing job. Have a look at our team rehearsals here

Tickets are still available to purchase from the Derngate Box Office if you would like to be part of the support squad for Team Monksmoor! https://tickets.royalandderngate.co.uk/91101/91692

Our new School Council has been up and running for a few months now and we recently welcomed members of Danetre Daventry Rotary Club to school to discuss some of our fundraising ideas and to put an exciting proposal to them. More details to follow in due course...
