Year 3 - Prehistoric pots, magnetic forces and project cam
This week in Year 3 we have started a new narrative: Theseus and the Minotaur. The children have been generating wonderful descriptions of characters. In maths we have started to look at unit fractions. We have also been looking at magnetism as we finish of our forces topic in science.
The children have also started their project on cam mechanisms by learning that the 3 component parts of the mechanism are the cam, the axle and the follower. They learned that the cam mechanism converts rotational movement into an up and down movement. They worked with a partner to create a working model of a cam mechanism.
Year 3 also began their unit of work, "Prehistoric pots" by learning about the Beaker Folk and how their pottery differed from the Neolithic pots. They learned that the Beaker Folk migrated from Iberia to Britain in about 2500BC, bringing new types of pottery construction. Their work was highly decorated using natural objects and the children looked at photographs of pots from this era and made preliminary sketches of the forms, shapes and patterns. These sketches will be used in Year 3's clay work in future sessions.
