May Day Celebration
We celebrated the return of spring with the crowning of our May King and May Queen and lots of maypole dancing on the afternoon of Wednesday 1st May. Unusually for the Monksmoor Park May Day Celebration there was no torrential rain! An enjoyable time was had by all.
We observed the longstanding tradition of crowning a May Queen and our tradition, to also crown a May King! Thank you to our friend and School Governor Rev. Dawn for crowning our May King and Queen.
The children were selected at random from across Reception to Year 5. In the future as our school ages, and we have a full complement of year groups we hope to have our Year 6 pupils be crowned King and Queen with the younger year groups taking on different May Day roles.
Throughout the school we have been learning about the May Day festival and just like our first May Day event in 2022, each class focussed on learning a traditional Maypole dance in their PE lessons recently. Everyone was excited to finally be able to dance in front of an audience. Every class from Nursery through to Year 5 danced at least once and they received a wonderfully warm reception from their audience.
Just like a family, traditions connect us and should echo our interests, values and beliefs. We hope that the traditions we are beginning now will always contain our school values and join us together in our learning and celebration.
Thank you to all the parents and family members who came to see us dance, and for clapping to the music and encouraging us all!
