Candlemas Service
Rev. Dawn and Rev. Lesley visited us today to celebrate the festival Candlemas. They taught us the name means 'mass' of the candles and it is the tradition of blessing all the candles used in the church for the upcoming year. Candlemas, or Candlemas Day, is also known as 'The Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord Jesus' and 'The Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary.'
Candlemas day is a Christian holy day which is celebrated every year on the 2nd of February. On the 2nd of February, many people bring their candles to their local church. The candles are blessed during Mass.
Candlemas is celebrated 40 days after the birth of Jesus. It marks the date when Mary and Joseph brought the baby Jesus to the temple to be presented to God. At the temple they met Anna and Simeon. Simeon held up the baby Jesus and named him, 'the Light to the World'.
Rev. Dawn gifted us our own blessed candle to keep burning throughout the year in our Collective Worship to remind us of the presence of God in the world. Rev. Dawn asked us to pray for our pupils, teachers and helpers to give us the courage to spread God's light throughout our community.
