Year 5 - Cookie moon phases

There has been much excitement over the last two weeks in Dragonfly Class due to the distribution of our Collective Worship scripts. I’ve loved seeing the children’s enthusiasm, and I’m so impressed with how quickly some of them have already learned their lines!

In maths, we’ve just completed our topic on place value, and I’m incredibly proud of how hard the children have worked. They can now confidently round numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000, and even 100,000! Our next unit is addition and subtraction. The children will explore written methods that were introduced in Year 4 and build upon this knowledge to tackle multi-step problems. as comparing stadium attendances and house prices, making the learning more engaging and meaningful.

In English, we have extended our knowledge of verbs and nouns, and revised how to construct simple, compound, and complex sentences. The effort the children are putting into joining their handwriting and improving their overall presentation is truly impressive, and I’m so proud of their progress. When we compared some of the start-of-the-year handwriting to the more recent work under the visualiser, it was wonderful to hear the children spontaneously applaud their peers' progress.

In science, we’ve had some creative fun! We used the cream in cookies to depict the different phases of the moon, which was both a unique and tasty way to visualise our learning. The children then explored how night and day occur, and enjoyed presenting their knowledge in dynamic duo presentations, using torches and tennis balls to explain the concept to their peers. It’s been wonderful to see their enthusiasm for this topic!

Due to the downpour, we were unable to continue our football unit outside. Although there was some initial disappointment, the children quickly shifted their focus and worked relentlessly on their fitness, balance, and strength in the hall, using circuit-style zones. I was worn out just watching them! It was fantastic to see everyone participating with such enthusiasm, and a true joy to witness how encouraging they were towards one another throughout the activities.

In art, Miss Martin has been working with the children on creating lithographs and using rollers and inks to stamp backgrounds for their futuristic, space-inspired art projects. The children explored a variety of space-themed images, zooming in to capture the details, and then recreated them using a range of mediums they chose. It’s been wonderful to see their creativity and individual styles shine through in these projects!
